93 Points” Just wine Points / Wine-X 2009 Sonoma County Harvest Fair Gold Medal for the 2005 Fanucchi Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel

"90 points" AND in Wine & Spirits magazine's "Year's Best Zinfandel"  The  February 2010 issue! "An old-school Sonoma Zin to decant for braised lamb."

Peter Fanucchi and this 2005 are Featured in the Fall 2010 issue of Wine & Spirits magazine's Zinfandel article by Josh Green focusing on the most currently outstanding, top rated and balanced Zinfandel. This one is the "ripest" of the top Zinfandels to achieve such a balance worthy to be among only 12 rated at 90 points or better!

Judit and Corina on Wine Dine TV (Online video) "...Wow, opens fast, thick-full-body, very food friendly, chocolate, divine with chocolate, blackberry, cinnamon, liquorish, nice complexity, very well balanced, masculine spiciness, suave, smooth, ever young, should be good through 2015...  4.8 points..." 90 Points / One Puff “Ripe, well-defined berries are juxtaposed in this wine’s ample aromas by a good dose of rich oak and the inviting scents of freshly baked brownies, and, while it is very big-bodied with flavors that drift very much into the ripe side, the wine achieves real success in the style by dint of its balance and deep fruit. Its tough finishing tannins signal the need for a few years of age, and it has the right pieces in place to make the wait one without risk.-(The 2009 Zinfandel issue) Connoisseurs Guide To California Wine  Volume33/Issue7 May 2009

Silver: North Of The Gate Wine Competition 2009

Tim Fish:  "Intense and rather rustic, but shows a sense of place, with notes of blueberry, blackberry, underbrush and white pepper. Tannins firm up the finish. Best from 2011 through 2014." WS Online 86 (AKA top 14 of the vintage! posted 12-2009)

2004 Old Vine Zinfandel (little available)
“99 Points” -Just wine Points / Wine-X

"An excellent, medium rich, well balanced Old Vine bottling, that is full bodied and quite supple on the palate, with rich, complex flavors (baked cherry, plum, toast, oak), and a very long finish. Fine quality. [2008-2009]" -Restaurant Wine / Ronn Wiegand

One “Puff” “89 points”
“This solid wine offers another exception to the rule that says high-alcohols Zins are all of the same stripe, for, while there is no denying the wine’s obvious ripeness, deep and defined blackberry fruit abounds at every turn. Full, plush and endowed with lots of weight and a fine spine of tannin, it ends with manageable heat and wholly avoids the dry edges so often seen in wines of its ilk.” -Connoisseurs’ Guide To California Wine September 2007 Page 163

“4 Stars – Exceptional!”
“Deep, dark red core with a bright garnet rim. The nose is filled with scents of raspberry and blackberry with hints of baked fennel and dried herbs. The palate confirms the nose with a firm oak note and soft, dusty tannins. The finish lingers with a touch of pepper and dried herbs.” -Beverage Experts / Bevx.com “Thirsty Thursday” 12-12-2007

“ Plum, beef and herb aromas lead to dried blueberry and anise flavors that are big-shouldered yet focused, finishing with taut, minerally tannins. 86 points

“Insider’s Favorite 5” of “California’s 75 Best Wines!” Food & Wine Magazine

“Excellent varietal Character. Old-vine intensity.” “…Today his Old-Vine Zinfandel as well as his Trousseau Gris, an aromatic white, are highly sought after by those in the know.” -Great Wines you can buy Online; Master Sommelier Catherine Fallis

“4 Stars – Exceptional!”
“Deep, dark red core with a bright garnet rim. The nose is beautiful offering scents of crushed raspberry and cassis, with accents of dried herbs, earth and anise. Lush while balanced on the palate featuring rustic ripe and dried fruit and earth notes. Perfectly balanced with tremendous depth and length. This wine is amazingly complex, reminiscent of a great Tuscan red.” -Beverage Experts / Bevx.com “Thirsty Thursday” 12-12-2007

2001 Old Vine Zinfandel (little available)

“3 Stars – Brilliant!”
“Deep ruby red color, bright and youthful to the rim. The nose is amazingly fresh and vibrant with ripe - not assertively sweet - raspberry accented with hints of earth and oak. The palate is quite dry, complex, and rustic; far more reminiscent of an Old World wine than Sonoma. The wine continues to evolve in the glass revealing additional layers and subtle flavors.” -Beverage Experts / Bevx.com “Thirsty Thursday” 12-12-2007

88 & one STAR!
"Pushing ripeness to the edge of dried grape concentration but stopping while the fruit still remains in view, this is a fairly big and rich wine plays off boysenberry notes against vanillin oak before running into youthfully coarse tannins in the latter half . It may never find real polish and smoothness, but it drinks well now as a strongly flavored, rough-edged wine suited to service with hearty barbecue. Also Category Rated with: "Robust Red Full tannin intense flavors For highly spiced meat dishes." and: "Drinkable now Further bottle aging can improve this wine" -Connoisseurs’ Guide 2004 Zinfandel issue

Silver -Sonoma County Harvest Fair
Bronze -San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition 2008

Old Vine Zinfandel Historical Highlights

Hundreds of Competition awards have been bestowed on Fanucchi Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel. When Fanucchi was regularly entering the top 11 competitions the Old Vine Zin ranked at or near the top!
#1 Most Awarded Zinfandel In the competitions tracked by, both, “California Grapevine” Sept 2001 & 2002 & #1 “California Wine Winners 2002”& “2003”!

Significant lessons were gleaned in the early years of Fanucchi Vineyards from competitions & writers. A prime example is 1997 vintage that they knew needed bottle age. Fanucchi reluctantly turned it in to “big critics” for their scheduled vintage tasting(s) as they insisted. They said it was young, tight & that time may never improve it! While it was entered in a couple of blind competitions that year and did won a couple of bronze medals, the next year it astoundingly took a silver medal in every major competition & by the time it collected 33 medals it not only took some Gold, but, Best Of Class & (missed the best Red of show by one vote) in mid 2001 & 2002!

With the following vintage Fanucchi refused to it hand to those critics before it was ready (so not at all) and while they panned the entire vintage all together Fanucchi’s 1998 up against the highly touted ’99 & ’00 in competition became what is probably the most highly awarded Zinfandel of all time! It’s proud list Trophies, Gold+ & Gold are listed @ the bottom of this page!

Highlights of Historical Critical Acclaim:
Over the years many have made the opportunity & space to write about Fanucchi Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel at least once:

“…it is delicious, well-made, and admirably expresses the fruit characteristics of Zinfandel more than many other wines from this vintage.” -Robert Parker/ The Wine Advocate 6-27-97

“Raiders of The Lost Zinfandel!” feature interview & with color pics in the Vineyard
-Wines & Spirits October ’04”

“Now this is Zinfandel, dark, chewy, rich & serious. Wow.” “…very hard to find if not impossible…” -Wall Street Journal 6-1-01

“92”, “…it is hard to find a bigger, bolder Zin than this... ” -Norm Roby /
“robywine.com” Vol.2 No.1, March 7, 1999

“91” “A dark, rich & polished wine, with a deep, complex core of
black cherry, wild berry, raspberry, tar & spice flavors. Finishes with supple tannins. Delicious now but likely better if cellared…” -Wine Spectator 4-30-97

“****+ Vibrantly fruity and rich; a powerful intensely flavored Zinfandel, tasting of raspberry, cherry, and red plum, with overtones of pepper, tomato, and oak.” -Restaurant Wine 1999 Issue #70

“From nearly-century-old vines. An excellent wine defining the old-vine style. Ripe, fruity, and very extracted and spicy, but not over the top. Manages to keep the alcohol under control and achieves a claret-like balance and harmony.” - “90”Wine Enthusiast July 2000 (page 64):
